Egyptian Sunflower Seeds

Egyptian sunflower seed (Helianthus annuus) from the Nile Delta is supplied in-shell and as kernels. The two are distinct products with different applications: in-shell seed is bought for the snack and roasting trade, while kernels are bought for bakery, confectionery, snack inclusion and further processing.

In-shell seed is specified on size grade, since size largely determines its value in the confectionery and roasting market. Kernels are specified on size, colour uniformity, and the proportion of broken and off-colour material, which is what determines whether they can be used in visible applications.

Applications include roasted snack production, bakery and cereal manufacture, confectionery, salad and food-service use, and oil pressing. Buyers should state whether kernels are intended for direct consumption without a further heat step, since that decides the microbiological specification.

The Nile Delta's fertile alluvial soils and the reliable dry harvest window suit the crop, and material passes a cleaning sequence with de-stoning, sieving, gravity separation, aspiration and magnetic separation, with optical sorting where a colour specification requires it.
