Egyptian Flaxseeds

Egyptian flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) from Fayoum is supplied whole and ground. Flax is bought principally for its oil profile and its fibre content, which is why it serves the food-supplement and functional-food markets as well as the bakery and feed trades.

Whole seed keeps far better than ground flax. Once milled, the oil is exposed and oxidation begins, so ground material has a materially shorter useful life and benefits from oxygen- and moisture-barrier packing. Where the buyer's process allows, milling close to use is the better technical decision.

Applications include bakery and cereal manufacture, food-supplement and functional-food production, oil pressing, and animal feed. Buyers should state the intended use in the enquiry, because the specification and documentation expectations differ sharply between the feed trade and the supplement market.

Fayoum's irrigated growing season and dry harvest window allow the crop to be dried quickly, and material passes a cleaning sequence with de-stoning, sieving, gravity separation, aspiration and magnetic separation.
