Egyptian Sesame Seeds (Natural)

Egyptian natural sesame (Sesamum indicum) from Upper Egypt is supplied whole, with the seed coat intact. Natural sesame keeps better than hulled seed — the coat gives some protection against oxidation and moisture — and it is specified where the buyer will hull, roast or press the material themselves, or where the coat is wanted in the finished product.

Buyers judge natural sesame on purity, colour uniformity, freedom from foreign matter and, where the material is destined for pressing, on oil content. Which of these are contractual and which informational is agreed before contracting rather than assumed.

Applications include oil pressing, tahini and halva manufacture, bakery and confectionery, snack production, and further processing into hulled seed. It is a dense seed, so a container reaches its weight limit with volume to spare — a useful characteristic when consolidating with a light, bulky product such as a leaf herb.

Upper Egypt's irrigated season and dry harvest window allow the crop to be dried quickly, and the material passes a cleaning sequence with de-stoning, sieving, gravity separation, aspiration and magnetic separation.
