Egyptian Marjoram

Egyptian marjoram (Origanum majorana) from Fayoum is one of Egypt's long-established export herbs, supplied rubbed, whole and as powder. Marjoram is milder and sweeter than oregano, and although the two are botanically close they are distinct products — specify the botanical name, since substitution between them is a documented issue in the trade.

Rubbed marjoram is the form most commonly specified for culinary and blending applications: the leaf is separated from the stalk and lightly broken, giving good aroma release with a leaf appearance the end user recognises. Whole leaf and powder are supplied where the buyer's process calls for them.

Applications include culinary seasoning and spice blends, meat and convenience-food manufacture, herbal infusions, and botanical extraction. Fayoum's warm days, cool nights and dry harvest window allow the crop to be dried quickly, preserving both volatile oil and the grey-green leaf colour buyers associate with well-handled material.
